Great WordPress plug-ins

I switched to WordPress around a year ago because managing my posts and such is way easier on it.

Sadly, the WordPress ecosystem kinda sucks; just like some aspects of .NET, you have a ton of stuff that’s just paid, or with free version that nags you at every corner to purchase them.

However, there are some really good plug-ins that are completely free! Here are a few of my favourites:

  • Detect Missing Adblock: when visiting this blog on certain devices, you might have seen a warning saying you don’t have an adblocker. This plug-in just does that, and encourages people to download one.
  • Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer: by far one of my favourites, it will go through your posts, detect all the links out, and check for their availability. If the website is available, it’ll be archived on the Web Archive. If not, it’ll try to redirect to an archived version.
  • Mirror Gravatar: this one is made by the one and only JWZ and will proxy all Gravatar avatars locally to avoid your users hitting Gravatar when loading comments with a profile picture gotten from an e-mail.
  • XCloner: just the best backup add-on ever. It’s completely free, accepts all kinds of backends; in short, just perfect.
  • Altcha: a great local captcha plugin; sadly kinda nags for the premium option (though not needed at all) and will require some tweaks if you use the ActivityPub extension.
  • ActivityPub: last but not least, this one allows this blog to federate posts and comments using ActivityPub.

Those are just a fraction of the plug-ins I use, but probably the most important. I could probably get away only having those, the rest being just some extras like having a notice on old posts.
