For some, e-mails can be a burden, but personally? I enjoy those more than ever.
Before going further, I know, e-mail is a deeply insecure way of communication which just can’t be fixed. No need to remind me of that, I know, that’s why I have Signal!!
Lately, following all the issues with Discord and other apps, I realised something: I hate mass messengers.
Being Discord, Telegram, or whatever thing that puts you in a large group stresses me like words cannot express. More than that, people now expect you to respond fast, and even start getting angry or spamming you if you don’t.
Please don’t do that, I won’t want to respond at all if it’s the case.
Once Discord becomes abandoned, I’ll just get rid of my account and not move anywhere else, end of an era for me; for the best.
And on the other paw, when I receive an e-mail, it’s nice and calm, only me and whoever sent me the thing. I can take my time to respond, they can take some time to write theirs.
It’s like writing those blog entries, I take my time, and I actually enjoy the process. There’s no timer, nothing.
The plaintext format I write in using Thunderbird also has some weird appeal to me. Nothing is fancy, it’s just text, it just works.
Needless to say, e-mail used to be a constant source of stress for me. I’ve been self-hosting those for a few years now using Mailcow, but ended up delegating the receiving and sending part to the local nonprofit IKI. Basically, IKI manages the sending and receiving part (through a permanent forever address), my server just does some degree of filtering (spam) and storage.
Since I started this setup, I started enjoying responding to e-mail once again. Instead of having a headache every time I want to send something, now I just write it, hit send, and eagerly wait for the reply.
If you too like emailing people, my address is jae@iki.fi, let’s chat like in the good old days.
