Lately, I’ve been experimenting with new styles, doing often the rounds in thrift stores and picking up what spoke to me.
Since the weather has been going warmer in the past few days, I’ve also started doing tests with those new clothes, and so far, I’m quite happy about it.
Of course, it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. What do I mean by that? Often, dressing up wildly differently from what you’re used to can be really unnerving.
For instance, I’ve only really started trying to be myself more around 2021 when I moved on my own. It took me until the November of the same year to finally go out in clothes I felt really comfortable wearing (namely, a skirt).
To paint the landscape: snow everywhere, temperatures in the negative, physically, I was freezing in the cold, but internally, I was dying from the heat from the stress of doing something so new to me.
It’s after re-doing that a few times after that I realised something: most people don’t give a shit.
Of course, at that time, I got a few stares, but that was the end of it. My brain completely skipped over most of the reactions that were either apathetic or positive.
Remember that in the end, if you’re confident enough, you can wear anything you want. Getting that confidence is the hard part; going out with friends or small bit by small bit is a great way of gaining it.
